"Why Chinese" Reflection (Rachael; 11/6/2011)

The information I found most helpful wast the advice to pick a small town to study Chinese at/ I also found it extremely helpful when Ben talked about teaching in China. Not only did he say it is a better way to immerse yourself, he ended up possible changing my mind about studying abroad while still  in school. I'd love to have more time to spend in the country and teaching will give me that opportunity. Although I have already watched Chinese dramas to try to improve my language skills, it never occurred to me to just turn the TV or radio to a Chinese channel or station and just listen, even if I do not necessarily comprehend what is being said. Another helpful tip was to specialize in an industry and combine it with my knowledge of Chinese in order to get a job. Even though I do not plan on going into the business world, I still felt it was relevant to everyday life.

Part of what made the talk so enjoyable was the atmosphere. The speakers were all very laid back and tried to make it less formal. I really took pleasure in the jokes that were made, especially since they were about relating Chinese culture to American culture. We were able to learn while still having fun. I also felt that everyone there was able to relate in some way to what was being said and idd not feel offended.
